Scouting Analysis

Players Scouting Analytics by tirdodbehbehani . Position :Point Guard [PG]

Skill Attribute
Speed
8.50
Quick first step and accelerates in a blip. Electric in transition
Athleticism
8.50
High flyer, fluid movement, elite vertical. Good body control
Ball Handling
8.00
Advanced dribble moves, can create space nicely. Nice crossover in particular
Passing Ability
8.50
His best attribute. Great vision. Has some really impressive finds.
Free Throws
8.00
Slashing mentality draws a lot of fouls and gets to the line at a strong rate (.512 FTr). 80% FT shooter (Stats as of 2/8/19)
Outside Shooting
6.00
Average shooter, not helped by taking difficult shots.
Mid-range shot consistency
6.50
Decent from midrange. Low volume however
Range
6.00
Takes extended shots from range, although at poor accuracy
Decision Making
6.00
His biggest question mark. Can be overambitious sometimes, tries to do too much and make the highlight play instead of the simple play. A bit reckless with the ball, tries to force passes into super tight windows. Reflected in high TO% (22.4% as of 2/8/19). Needs to iron out kinks
Ability to Finish in the lane
6.50
Crafty finisher, although inconsistent
Controls Tempo
7.50
Sets the tone for his Murray State team. Can accept pressure and read the defense
Runs Fast Break
8.50
Exceptional in transition. Uses speed and acceleration to get to the rim, great and finding outlet passes and cutters to the rim
Runs Set Offenses
6.50
Also sometimes gets impatient and jacks up a three instead of waiting for the play to develop
Creates Plays for Others
8.00
Uses vision and deceptive ball handling to be a playmaker on the floor. Knows how to draw defenders in and hit the open man. Has a strong "feel" for the game. Best Assist% in the country
Patience with the Ball
6.00
Little to none. When the play breaks down or when the shot clock is running down he'll just throw up a hopeless lob to the rim. Needs to grow in this area at the next level
Defensive Effectiveness (Man to Man)
6.50
On Ball - Gets beaten easily, too upright in stance. Lazy going through screens. Small frame does not help him here Off Ball - Uses length and quick twitch athleticism to generate steals and get out in transition. High IQ allows him to read the play
Defensive Effectiveness (Zone)
0.00
Little to no sample size
Steals/Disruptiveness
7.00
Profound Basketball IQ and Length allows him to make calculated gambles and create turnovers
Rebounding Skills
5.50
Grab and go rebounder. Immediately looks for kickahead/outlet pass. Can get the occasional offensive rebound
Versatility
6.00
Needs the ball to be successful at this point in time. Poor when asked to guard bigger defenders
Leadership Ability
7.00
Carries the load for Murray State.
Intangibles
8.50
High motor, resilient, high basketball IQ
Strengths
Passing/vision, speed, athleticism, transition offense, High Basketball IQ, dribbling
Weaknesses
Decision making, on ball defense, shooting, finishing in traffic
Overall Analysis
Ja Morant is one of the more divisive players in this year's class. I don't think he's as good as his stans do, but I don't think he's as bad as his detractors say. I think he falls somewhere in the middle. He's a raw prospect, he's going to need some time to refine his decision making and iron out the kinks to become a really good NBA PG. He's a high upside low floor kind of player to me. Top 5 Prospect in this year's draft
