Player Scouting Report

Players Scouting Reviewer : myles.whitmore . Position :Wide Receiver [WR]

Rashod Bateman is projected by many to run a sub-4.5 40-yard dash.
Pass Catching
Bateman is a surehanded pass catcher. He plucks the ball out of the air with his fingers and does not let the ball hit his body. This will make him a great possession receiver on the outside.
Route Running
Rashod Bateman runs crisp routes with efficient footwork. He excels at sealing off defenders and using his body to give his QB a great target. However, he could improve his release since it has an awkwardly inefficient hitch. While playing in Minnesota's scheme got him significant separation, Bateman has enough agility and elusiveness to shake defenders.
Bateman has inconsistent strength. While he is a satisfactory blocker, he tends to get pushed off his route against press coverage. This isn't a huge liability due to his large frame, but it is something to keep in mind.
Vertical Ability
Rashod Bateman is an adequate deep threat. While he operates best within the intermediate range, Bateman's contested catchability and large catch radius make him a quality jump ball receiver.
Run after Catch
Bateman has the shiftiness to make a defender miss in open space. After a contested-catch, he has the natural composure to land on his feet and fight for extra yardage.
Catching in Traffic
Rashod Bateman's contested catchability is incredible. Due to his 6'2" frame and strong hands, Bateman regularly fights through contact to compete for jump balls. He also has the upper body strength to wrestle the ball out of a defender's hands.
Big Play Ability
Rashod Bateman is a big-play threat. He has the ability to make spectacular catches against traffic, make defenders miss in space, and find open holes in coverage to pick up big yardage.
Rashod Bateman has had no injuries during his college career.
Rashod Bateman is tough as nails. He is a physical wideout who outmuscles defenders in contested catch situations and as a blocker.
Rashod Bateman had an extremely productive season in 2020. However, the pandemic cut his season, leading him to be a less productive player.
Bateman returned to his team in 2020 despite concerns over COVID. That shouldn't go unnoticed.
Deep Threat
As mentioned earlier, Rashod Bateman is only a decent deep-threat. Due to his lack of speed, Bateman would most likely have to rely on contested catches and a quality scheme to be a productive deep target. However, his route running skills and ability to find holes in zone coverage will help him as well.
Over the Middle
Rashod Bateman's route running and elusiveness make him an excellent target on slants and post routes.
Rashod Bateman is a very intelligent wideout who finds holes in zone coverage. He needs to work on his recognition as a blocker, but he has the toughness and coachability to be a phenomenal wideout in the NFL.
Rashod Bateman is a productive wideout on a game-to-game basis.
Rashod Bateman's contested catchability is incredible. Due to his 6'2" frame and strong hands, Bateman regularly fights through contact to compete for jump balls. He also has the upper body strength to wrestle the ball out of a defender's hands. Additionally, Bateman has the footwork and elusiveness to shake defensive backs in coverage. This is especially true on intermediate routes, where he runs fantastic routes across the middle. As a result, he can run a complete route tree with crisp cuts and double moves. Once he has caught the ball, Bateman fights for extra yardage with ease and makes defenders miss in open space.
Rashod Bateman's lack of speed will likely turn off some offensive coordinators. His 4.5 speed prevents him from being the deep-threat who can burn defensive backs for deep bombs. Another issue for Bateman relates to his release. Despite his fancy footwork in between breaks, Bateman has an awkwardly inefficient hitch. Furthermore, he struggles to beat press coverage despite his large frame.
Overall Analysis
Rashod Bateman projects to be a high-end possession receiver at the next level. Teams like the Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins, and Washington Football team would benefit from his ability to move the chains with fantastic route running. The Dolphins would especially appreciate his ability to haul in contested catches. Due to the abundance of receiving talent in this draft, Bateman projects to be a late first-round/early second-round pick. However, it would be inexcusable for Bateman to fall outside the mid-second round.
