Player Scouting Report

Players Scouting Reviewer : TFriedlaender . Position :Tight End [TE]

He is not particularly quick when getting started, but he has average speed when he gets to his top speed.
Pass Catching
He is really good at high pointing the football and making athletic catches over defenders. He doesn't always make the easier contested catches, needs to show a little more consistency.
Route Running
Has enough athleticism to run good routes, he needs to be coached up with his technique. I would like to see him use his hands more violently as well as make sharper cuts on his breaks.
He use his strength well when route running, as he doesn't create much separation so he uses his strength to help position himself. Could be better about breaking weak tackles.
Run Blocking
He knows how to make initial contact, and he is really good at initially knocking defenders off of their spot. But he needs to learn how to finish blocks, by continuing to drive the defender back instead of letting the defender slide off.
Shows flashes of strong cuts, but is not consistent enough.
Run After Catch
Gets taken down too easily by smaller defenders.
Big Play Ability
He is able to make athletic catches down the field. But he won't out run anyone, or break many tackles.
Matt's best attribute is his catch radius, he is a big body TE with long arms and has the ability to high point the football over smaller defenders. He isn't fast but he is a smooth runner and has the ability to get on top of a defender when faced against man coverage. He is a good possession receiver as well using his big body to shield defenders from jumping the route. He also has very good hands where he is able to make athletic body adjusting catches.
For being as big as he is he could be a better blocker, he has a good initial hit but needs to learn how to drive his legs and finish the block. He also could be a better route runner, he isn't very quick in and out of his cuts and tends to round out what should be sharp cuts. He also doesn't create any separation at all, I would like to see him use his hands more to get open. He can also let the ball into his body which can cause some drops.
Overall Analysis
He looks like an NFL TE, has the size and the athleticism to be a mismatch for defenders. He is still a really raw receiver, you need to clean up his route running and catching the ball away from his body. And he is a capable blocker but again he needs more technique refinement, mostly he needs to finish his blocks. If he continues to improve in those areas he has a shot at being 2nd or 3rd round pick but as of now I see him more around the 4th round.
