Aaron Long isn't the quickest, but he makes up for it through his athleticism and brilliant defending.
His dribbling isn't that good but he's not the type of defender to play out the back so he doesn't really need to be a good dribbler.
1 v 1 Ability
He isn't the greatest when defending 1v1 against players with pace. But Long still does tend to win many ground and aerial duels, averaging around 5 duels won per game.
Passing is definitely one of Long's weaknesses especially his long passing. But since the Red Bulls aren't a side that tends to play out from the back, the defenders don't necessarily have to be great passers.
Aaron Long has great balance and strength. His athleticism is one of his greatest traits. With his strength, he's able to outmuscle many forwards and it also makes him a very imposing defender.
This is probably Long's greatest traits. He is immense in the air winning approximately 2.75 aerial duels per game. This past season he won 68 aerial duels for the entire season which was the 4th best in the MLS. He also scored 3 headers which were his highest amount of goals scored in a season.
His field vision isn't the greatest with him only averaging 59 completed forward passes this past season. His average pass length was also only 17.61 meters so he isn't the greatest long passer either.
His positioning is a quality he's very good at. He's probably one of the best defenders in the league at knowing where to be at the right time in order to break up plays and intercept passes.
Long is a very physical defender but he isn't that aggressive. He's only ever committed 49 fouls in his professional MLS career and only picked up 4 yellows in that same time frame.
His finishing isn't the greatest since he's a defender. He's only ever scored 4 goals in his professional career, but 3 of them came last season so he is improving. This past season he took 26 shots with 11 being on target. So scoring 3 goals from 11 shots on target is a pretty good return for a defender.
His marking ability is spectacular. Since he reads the game so well he marks many top strikers quite easily, such as David Villa, Carlos Vela, etc. Through his sheer athleticism and his ability to win many ground and aerial duels, he's definitely one of the best defenders in the league at marking.
His stamina is quite amazing for a defender. He played for every single Red Bulls game in the MLS last season and ended up leading the team in minutes played with 3166 minutes. He's also never missed a game due to injury since he's never suffered a major injury in his professional career.
His strengths are his ground duels, aerial duels, athleticism and his positioning and reading of the game.
His weaknesses are mainly his passing ability especially his long passing. Also, his 1v1 defending isn't that good against quick forwards.
Aaron Long has had an incredible rise these past couple years going from a player who played for the Red Bulls reserve team to helping their first team win the supporters shield in 2018 with the least amount of goals conceded. Because of his great improvement and amazing defending throughout the season he ended up winning the award for Best Defender in the MLS for the 2018 season.
