The Seahawks have proven to be one of the most efficient drafting teams in the NFL in recent years and this year was no exception. The team had very few needs and filled each of them with multiple selections. Germain Ifedi was linked to the Seahawks early in the draft process by scouts familiar with the Seahawks offensive system. While Ifedi does look like the type of player that Seattle covets his tape isn’t terribly clean and he might need a year or two to develop fully. Jarran Reed is another player that fits the bill for what Seattle covets. Reed is a capable, if not supremely talented, tackle that gets the most out of his abilities. He frequently outplayed his more talented teammates in Tuscaloosa. CJ Prosise will get the first crack at replacing Marshawn Lynch. He is a converted receiver that has a unique skill set. He’s a bit of a project but he could be very special. Nick Vannett is a workmanlike tight end that will get some minutes in jumbo packages. Rees Odhiambo is a physical interior lineman that offers some depth and training camp competition. Quinton Jefferson is a nice developmental player at defensive tackle, and a nice hedge against Reed disappointing. Alex Collins is the best college back of the team’s three running back selections. He does not have the upside of Prosise but he is more pro ready now. Joey Hunt is another interior lineman to provide depth, this time at center. Kenny Lawler is a tall receiver that could find a home as the team’s 5th receiver despite being limited to a possession style role. Zac Brooks has a lot to prove in order to make this roster but he is a nice hedge should Collins or Prosise get hurt or underperform.

  1. Seattle drafted in bunches this year. Three offensive linemen, three defensive linemen, and three running backs. That makes good sense along both lines given the contract situations of veterans. At running back it appears to reflect the growing sentiment in the league that more bodies at a position increases the likelihood of finding a gem. These days it appears team’s prefer to rely on development as opposed to raw talent.

  2. Not taking a cornerback was a bit of a surprise if only because of how much better Seattle is with a great secondary. They will likely struggle at one cornerback spot this year but drafting a player would have given them more options in 2017.

  3. Jimmy Graham might not be as entrenched as the team’s long term starter as many people figured when Seattle traded for him. Vannett’s game improved dramatically as an upperclassman and one wonders what will happen should he perform well as a rookie.
