The Jets draft started off with one of the best players (uninjured) at their primary position of need falling to them at 20th overall. While Darron Lee’s skills do not perfectly fit the Jets scheme - and there will be a learning curve for him - his strongest attribute is his speed, something the Jets sorely need in their linebacking corps. The Jets and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick remain at odds over a new contract and drafting Christian Hackenberg gives the team a hedge for the future as well as some leverage against Fitzpatrick. Hackenberg was overrated as a prospect - and we never thought he was going to get near the first round but he has the size and skill set to intrigue NFL coaches. His reputation for being petulant, and his very rough game tape, aside, Hackenberg could be the future of the Jets. Jordan Jenkins is another solid outside linebacker prospect that will also need some fine tuning. Jenkins doesn’t appear to be a natural pass rusher, like Lee, but he is big and physical enough to hold his own in the running game. Justin Burris gives the team another tall cornerback whom they can use to jam receivers on the line. They won’t need him to play for some time. Brandon Shell is a solid but raw tackle prospect that could find a home at guard. The team took a flyer on a punter in the 6th round and then finished out the draft with Charone Peake, a big bodies receiver that times well but plays slower. He could find a spot on the practice squad.

  1. Outside linebacker was the team’s biggest need and they filled it well. Both Lee and Jenkins have the potential to get on the field early.

  2. Christian Hackenberg could be their future guy IF he gets to work. Errant passes were his hallmark in college and that will have to be corrected.

  3. Brandon Shell could be the steal of this class.
