Recap:

The Patriots are a difficult team to peg in the draft each year because the analysis of people outside the team vs the internal analysis is usually quite different. It is clear that the Patriots play by their own rules and are willing to change their image based on the whims of Bill Belicheck. They almost always draft well though, or maybe they just do a good job of developing their players once they have drafted them. Cyrus Jones is the newest second round defensive back selected by the Patriots. The team has an inconsistent history with second round defensive backs but if Jones is asked to cover the slot man exclusively - with some special teams duties - then he should work out fine. Joe Thuney is a classic Patriots offensive lineman and one would expect him to work out given the team’s success drafting that position. Jacoby Brissett was a good value for a team that needs a quarterback during Tom Brady’s absence. Defensive Tackle Vincent Valentine was a curious choice in the third round but offers the kind of size the Patriots covet for their linemen. Malcolm Mitchell was an intriguing day 2 pick. If it were not for some injuries Mitchell would have been drafted much higher. Kamu Grugier-Hill is a tall cornerback that the team can develop for press coverage/ Elandon Roberts and Ted Karras figure to get a year on the practice squad while Devin Lucien could find a home on a roster starved for receiver depth.

Analysis:

  1. It’s tough to see how the Patriots solved their cornerback position for 2016. Finding clean game tape on Cyrus Jones is not easy and Grugier-Hill is a work in progress.

  2. The team drafted two guards as a sign that they were not entirely pleased with the play of the play of last year’s reserves.

  3. The double dip at receiver could be icing on the cake for this year’s class. Both receivers have the skill set to factor early, both of the Patriots starters are prone to missing games, and Tom Brady doesn’t need much to help a receiver look good.
