Upon getting some much needed sleep and a hearty breakfast it is time to take a second, less foggy, look at yesterday’s first round.

  1. Cleveland now has 5 selections in the first two rounds of next years draft. They are also the best bet to be the worst team in the league again. No matter what else happens Cleveland has won the 2018 NFL quarterback derby as they’ll have the ammunition to get whomever they want without mortgaging the future.  At some point though, the Browns need to take a quarterback. For now the team is running the risk of having a deep roster with few great players.

  2. I gave San Francisco an A+ grade, which they deserved, but I forgot to add context. The 49ers have had good drafts for a number of years. Drafting hasn’t been the problem in San Francisco. Having a front 7 with 4 first round picks and a secondary with two first round safeties should give them a dominating defense again. Should is the operative word there. San Francisco has to do a better job at developing talent on offense. Still after one day John Lynch has already had more draft success than Matt Millen enjoyed in his entire career running drafts.

  3. People are completely missing the point regarding the Bears pursuit of Mitch Trubisky. Washington once spent 3 first round picks, and one second round pick, to move from $6 overall to #2 overall for a quarterback. Last season the Eagles gave up 2 firsts, a second, a third, a fourth,  to move up to #2, from 15, and take Carson Wentz. In this case the Bears gave up fewer overall pick and only 1 selection in the first two rounds, as opposed to the other trades which involved 4 and 3 picks in the first two rounds, respectively. The point is that moving up to get a quarterback is always expensive in the NFL draft.

  4. I just really don’t like what the Titans did. Corey Davis is a very good receiver but he’s not likely a dominant one. Adoree Jackson is a risky pick and there were 4-5 better cornerbacks on the board, in my opinion. I think the Titans blew this draft.

  5. Denver played everyone, at least in the media, like a drum. Reports of their interest in Cam Robinson - and his late rise up draft boards - dominated the last week or so. In the end the film didn’t lie. Garett Bolles was the pick, as he should have been, and the Broncos didn’t move an inch to get him.

  6. This offseason the top 10 free agent offensive linemen signed deals averaging $43 million dollars There were only two offensive linemen selected in the first round of the draft, the lowest total in memory. Clearly the teams did their homework before free agency opened.

  7. Green Bay and Seattle both traded out of the first round and will have the first two selections of Day 2. With each team needing a cornerback the run could be set early on. Chidobe Awuzie could step in and start immediately in Green Bay and Kevin King appears to be as good a fit for Seattle as there is at cornerback. I could see 15 defensive backs being selected in round 2.

…….And Another Thing…..

The top remaining players on my board are

Zach Cunningham

Forrest Lamp

Western Kentucky

Dalvin Cook

Kevin King

Chidobe Awuzie

Buda Baker

Jordan Willis

Kansas State

Cam Robinson

Carl Lawson

Fabian Moreau
