Recap:

A few years after getting a huge haul to move down, so a team could draft a quarterback, The Rams moved up in order to do the same thing. In this case the relocation of the franchise to Los Angeles, and the slew of additional picks the Rams had, made a little more sense. While Goff looks like a safe bet to be a great quarterback he’ll need to great almost immediately since the talent on the Rams team is unlikely to keep pace with the rest of the league for the next few seasons. Goff is a very good prospect though, and drafting him will excite a fan base that might not otherwise be as excited as the league is betting on. Tyler Higbee is an athletic marvel with a history of injuries and some recent off field issues. If he keeps his head on straight he could be a great weapon for a young quarterback to grow with. Pharoe Cooper is another athletic playmaker that should gel with Goff early on. Cooper figures to see action early as a slot receiver and return specialist. Temarrick Hemmingway  is a great hedge against Higbee. Both tight ends are receivers first and both can stretch the field. Unlike Higbee there is very little to worry about with Hemmingway. The Rams needed some depth at linebacker and Josh Forrest could give them an athletic developmental player for the future. At worst he should excel on special teams this season. Mike Thomas is a fundamentally sound receiver that runs great routes and has some of the best hands in this draft. He’s not a burner though, and will have issues with press coverage. Still, Thomas offers Goff a dependable outlet receiver moving forward.

Analysis:

  1. This draft was clearly about getting, and helping Jared Goff. The Rams took 4 receivers after taking Goff, presumably to make sure the face of their franchise can develop a rapport with at least one of them.

  2. As much as I like Goff, giving up so many early picks for one player is too much of a risk. Unless Goff plays at an All Pro level the Rams are not going to be good enough to win consistently over the next few seasons with their roster.
