Los Angeles Rams 2017 Team Needs
The Rams have a new Head Coach in their second year in Los Angeles, a second year quarterback in Jared Goff, and a lot of offensive needs. With a defense that is quite talented and largely stable for the next few years the Rams need to build an offense around Goff sooner rather than later, else they risk ruining his confidence for good.
Primary Needs: WR, CB, OT
Secondary Needs: TE, DT, DE
Free Agency Strategy: The Rams are losing a number of players including two of their primary receivers. Both Pierre Garcon and Desean Jackson might have an interest in moving to LA to reunite with Sean McVay but the Rams probably won’t get better value than they will by resigning Kenny Britt who should feel some loyalty towards the team. Trumaine Johnson is their biggest free agent and should be their first priority in free agency. Resigning Johnson would allow the Rams to focus their draft on building an offense for Goff to use. Dominique Easley has been a great player for the Rams but will be looking for a premium contract that the Rams cannot afford for their third defensive tackle. Bringing in a veteran tight end like Vernon Davis to help Goff along would be a huge score.
Draft Strategy: The Rams only have 6 selections, including one in the first three rounds. The team must upgrade their offensive line situation and their receiving corps. They will probably need to trade down from the 37th overall pick in order to add enough bodies to their camp. By trading into the low second the Rams could still add a player ready to contribute and possibly two. Trading back into the late second round, in addition for a third round selection, would allow the Rams to take similarly talented players at receiver and cornerback. Malachi Dupre and Cooper Kupp would be receiving options while Quincy Wilson, Kevin King, and Jourdan Lewis would be options at cornerback. Waiting until the third round to add a tight end like Jordan Leggett or Gerald Everett would help Goff’s development, Michael Roberts would be an option at tight end in the 4th round.
