Green Bay had a nice run but is going to lose a lot of talent this year. Fortunately they had a solid draft last season to help offset some of the losses. They also have Aaron Rodgers who is still among the best quarterbacks in the game.
Primary Needs: OLB, RB, CB
Secondary Needs: OG, TE
Free Agency Strategy: With three of their top 4 outside linebackers eligible for free agency the Packers have a clear need to keep at least one of those players. Nick Perry has been the better player by far in recent years and is still in the prime years of his career. The Packers should use a sizeable chunk of their $41 million in cap space to bring him back. Jared Cook fit so nicely in Green Bay that resigning him should be a priority, although Cook might want to maximize his value on the open market. The Packers should be able to find a cheap alternative at tight end if he does. TJ Lang has been so good at guard that one would think the team would have extended him by now but the Packers might not want to invest more money at guard than they have to meaning Lang will be a highly coveted free agent.
Draft Strategy: Picking first at 29, Green Bay should be able to fill an immediate need with a value pick be it at cornerback, outside linebacker, guard, tight end, or possible even running back. Tre’Davious White, Marlon Humphrey, and Gareon Conley should be available at the end of the first round, and each will be able to start immediately for the Packers. Takkarist McKinley and Hassan Reddick bring some ability to rush the passer from the outside linebacker position. Dan Feeney, the highest rated guard will still be available, and David Njoku is a tight end prospect that scouts are raving about. Christian McCaffrey, should he be available, would be such a great addition to the Packers offense, that the team would need to seriously consider him. In the second round defensive backs like Cordrea Tankersley, Kevin King, and Jourdan Lewis could come in and compete for the Packers immediately. Running backs like Kareem Hunt, D'onta Foreman, or Corey Clement would also upgrade the roster. A pass catching tight end like Evan Engram in the second round would make sense. Jordan Leggett or Garrett Everett could also be considered in the third round area.
