The November matches were bound to be pivotal in most of the groups. Tuesday was “judgment day” for several clubs as their Champions League dreams were extinguished, while others will be planning for the knockout round. Here is how the first four groups stand after Tuesday’s action:

In Group A, Arsenal found themselves in an early hole going down 2-0 to Ludogrets (Russia). But, the Gunners were able to score moments later to get back into the action and soon took over the game, as expected, and pulled out a 3-2 win. Paris Saint-Germain had a similar close call against an FC Basel team that has played well in this tournament. However, Arsenal and PSG are now through to the next round with their November 23rd matchup likely to determine the group winner. Ludogrets and FC Basel will meet that same day with the hopes of moving onto the Europa Cup as the 3rd place finisher.

Nothing got resolved in Group B as Napoli (Italy) came back to tie Besiktas (Turkey) 1-1. Meanwhile, Benfica squeezed by Dynamo Kiev 1-0 to tie Napoli for the group lead with Besiktas a point behind. All three have a chance to still advance, although Benfica will have the tougher road with a visit to Besiktas next before hosting Napoli in next month. Technically, even Dynamo Kiev can still advance out of this group although it would take heavy intervention.

Manchester City’s 3-1 defeat of FC Barcelona kept the Brits in striking distance of Barca’s lead, although it would take a major collapse for either to not advance as current 3rd place Monchengladbach sits 3 points back with two games to play after Celtic came back to tie the Germans at 1-1. Given that both teams have to face Barcelona and Manchester City still, Monchengladbach has to be given the Europa advantage with a current 2 point lead and their next game at home against Manchester City – where a draw should be enough to get them through.

Group D is also down to a two team race as Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich has pulled away from the group. Atletico has a 3 point lead in the group by virtue of their win over Bayern earlier in the tournament. Bayern will be seeking revenge in the final game between them at Allianz Arena next month with the group title on the line. PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands) and FC Rostov (Russia) current sit with 1 point in the group and will be looking for the Europa Cup berth. That can come down to their final match which will see PSV at home.
