CBA Comparison

The Collective Bargaining Arbitration is different sports league has lots of common terms. I chose several things I feel very interesting to compare them in the different leagues. The first one is the salary cap. Can superstar players make as much money as they want? Where is the limitation of the salary? What are the different maximum salary policies in each league? The second one is the minimum salary. How much can the athlete earn at least in its league? The third one is the vacation and getaway time when players are off-season.

Salary cap:

The different league has a different policy for the salary cap. The NBA has a soft salary cap, but if the player’s salary excesses the salary cap, the team has to pay the luxury tax. The luxury tax is a special version of the salary cap. Take Golden State Worriers, for example, they used to have Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant, these big names cost money and the team paid lots of luxury tax to keep the high salary for superstar players. The NFL has a hard salary cap, it means all the teams must follow the salary cap and none of them can excess the salary even Patriots. MLB doesn’t have a salary cap, they only have the luxury tax, which is a special version of the salary cap. In NHL, the maximum player salary was capped at 20% of the team salary cap. The numbers of salary cap graph are in the following part.

Minimum salary:

In NFL, beginning in 2011 the salary of any player on a Club’s Active/Inactive List at any time during the regular season will be not less than the following:

Vacations

Vacations are count as the benefit for players in the contract too. It is surprisingly same for the rule in these leagues for offseason. Once players finish the mandatory camps and meetings, they are free to go.

NBA players have 18 days off in the regular season.

NHL players get 7-9 days off in January as a bye week.
